Summer Learning journey - Activity 64 - Sun, wind & rain - Kickstart

 Kia Ora bloggers,

I hope you are enjoying your holiday. For this task we were supposed to make a weather journal. I did this for 2 days in a row. The people who predict weather are called medioligist. Now I would like to share with you all a little bit about what I learnt about the history of predicting weather.

Before this modern way in which people find out the weather came in people would predict what the weather would be like with the sense of nature. The way they figured it out was very cool and smart. I am going to be telling you guys about the different techniques they would use to figure out what the weather would be like . I am going to only tell a few of them  and tell the rest of it in the step it up activity.

The Nor' west Arch

Maori and European settlers noticed a long grey cloud stretched across the sky. They discovered a warm   north - west wind appear . When the arch appeared in the morning it would most likely to be hot, dry and windy.

The Whakaari/ White island plume

The people of Te Whanau-a-Apanui in the bay of plenty figured out when a cloud of smoke raised up into the sky from the volcanic white island (Whakaari) moved towards the left side soon after rain would start pouring. Whenever plume came out in a flat line, wind then appeared.

The sound of waves

When the sound of breaking waves boom is heard from the valley coast, the people of Te Roroa know that bad weather and rain will appear.

Here is my weather Journal slides.

Here is the video.

Have a nice day!
Bye

Chris here again, from the Summer Learning Journey 2021/2022!

Tēnā koe for completing another task! Did you enjoy this Sun, Wind & Rain kick start activity?

That’s really cool about the Nor’ west Arch, I had not heard that before, nor the White Island plume story! Thank you for sharing! Love how much effort you put into this journal, and the video. Glad you’re coping with the weather! What do you do when it’s 27 degrees? Does your family go to the beach, or do you stay home to hide from the heat?

I’m looking forward to seeing what else you post in these last couple of weeks!

    Ngā mihi,
    Chris
